Learn new skills and connect with like-minded individuals at 91影视 this June and July. Five culinary classes, four dance classes, and a quilting class will be offered through the Workforce Continuing Education Department. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced hobbyist, these classes will provide an excellent opportunity to learn, socialize, and enjoy the process of creating something new.
Culinary
"Healthy Summer Meals for Two" will teach you how to put together delicious healthy meals with minimal work. You will make two complete meals suitable for hot summer days. Held on Tuesday, June 13, from 5:30-7:30 pm, this class will cost $75.
"Basic Cooking Skills for All Ages" is a hands-on learning experience with Chef Huggin. You'll learn useful knife skills and how to chop, saut茅, roast, and emulsify. Held on Tuesday, June 6, from 5:30-7:30 pm, this class will cost $75. An additional course will be offered on Tuesday, June 20, from 5:30-7:30 pm.
In "European Torte," Chef Brunner will share his grandmother's recipe for Hazelnut torte in this two-day class, and you will learn how to create a Mocha flavored Italian Buttercream to finish and decorate the cake. Held Thursday and Friday, June 8 & 9, from 2-5 pm, this class will cost $150.
In "Peach Desserts," you will create quick and easy desserts using our local peaches, including a peach cr猫me Brul茅, elegant grilled peach and goat cheese plated dessert, and classic peach cobbler. Held Wednesday, July 12, from 4-8 pm, this class will cost $150.
In "Eclairs/CreamPuffs," you will explore how to create bakery-style pate au choux pastries and fill them with scratch-made vanilla pudding. Top off Eclairs with a scrumptious chocolate ganache to wow your guests. Held Wednesday, July 19, from 4-7 pm, this class will cost $75.
Personal Enrichment
"Quilting "Camp" for Adults" is a weeklong "camp" for beginner to advanced quilters with a desire to create a memory quilt, pillow, or wall hanging. You will learn techniques for making t-shirt quilts, printing old or new pictures on fabric, and using appliqu茅 and patchwork to tell a memorable story or celebrate an event. Held Monday-Friday, June 5-9, from 9 am-noon, this class will cost $95.
Dance
"Introduction to Line Dance" is for the absolute beginner. If you need more confidence to dance at social events, this class is for you. We will take the time to learn basic steps and patterns to build your coordination and confidence on the dance floor. We'll learn popular dances like The Electric Slide, Cupid Shuffle, Copperhead Road, and others. After six weeks, you may feel ready to further develop your skills in our AB Beginner class. Held Monday, July 10-August 14, from 5-6 pm, this class will cost $50.
"AB Beginner Line Dance" is a class intended to bridge the gap between Intro and Beginner+. You've danced the basics line danced at social events and are ready to build on that knowledge. Our instructor will guide you to an improved foundation of dance-step terminology, rhythm counts, and dance floor etiquette. You'll experience a variety of absolute beginner line dances to different genres of music. Leave your inhibitions at the door and join us on the dance floor. After six weeks, you'll feel confident participating in the Beginner+ class. The prerequisite for this class is "Introduction to Line Dancing," or knowing the dances of Electric Slide, Cupid Shuffle, and Copperhead Road. Held on Thursday, July 13-August 17, from 5-6 pm, this class will cost $50.
"Beginner+ Line Dance" will build upon the skills learned at the AB Beginner level. You'll learn dances suitable for those with dance experience, with some emphasis on body posture and styling principles. The dances will provide a natural progression of complexity- steps, turns, syncopations, tags, and restarts. The prerequisite for this class is "Introduction to Line Dancing" and/or "AB Beginner class." Held Monday, July 10-August 14, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.
"Improver Line Dance" will feature dance routines suitable for the experienced line dancer who has mastered a comprehensive range of step patterns and movements. This six-week class is intended to satisfy the seasoned dancer with new challenges that will prove fun and rewarding. Held on Thursday, July 13-August 17, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.
Registration
Seats are still available for these Continuing Education classes and do not require an application. To register, call Continuing Education at (910) 695-3980 between 8 am and 5 pm Mondays through Thursdays and 8 am-Noon on Fridays. All major credit cards are accepted. Fall Semester
The fall semester flightPath will be published on the 91影视 website in mid-July (www.sandhills.edu/flightpath). It will contain information about all curriculum programs and the Continuing Education classes scheduled to begin August through December.
Curriculum classes will begin on August 14. In addition to the traditional 16-week semester, there will be two eight-week sessions, one beginning on August 14 and the second on October 11. Boys & Girls Club
A Boys & Girls Club unit is offered on the Sandhills campus. It runs from 2:30 to 6:30 pm for kindergarten through fifth grade. The Club is ideal for parents/guardians taking SCC afternoon or evening classes, those who need study time, need to utilize the computer lab, or work on projects. Club participants will receive homework assistance, and dinner is offered. The cost is $40 per child per year. The Club provides transportation from McDeeds Creek, Farm Life, and Carthage Elementary schools.
In addition, drop-in services are available free of charge to Sandhills students from 6-9 pm. This is ideal for students taking afternoon or evening classes, working on group projects, or for other academic reasons. Classes for High School Students
Moore and Hoke County High School students can take SCC classes at no cost as juniors and seniors. High school counselors can help schedule these classes or home or private school students can contact Elizabeth Yarrington at yarringtone@sandhills.edu.
Students who reside in Moore and Hoke Counties that successfully complete the required number of classes through Sandhills while in high school can qualify to receive two full years of paid tuition through our Sandhills Promise program. Sandhills awards over $350,000 to pay tuition and fees for Sandhills Promise students each year. Since its inception in the Fall of 2017, 1,504 students have participated in the Sandhills Promise. The Sandhills Promise applications are due each year by mid-July.
