Free Small Business Seminars in September

Learn how to start, grow, and manage your small business in September. Sandhills Community College Small Business Center is committed to helping small businesses grow by providing high-quality, readily accessible assistance and support to increase the success rate and number of viable small businesses throughout North Carolina. Experts in the field will guide students through starting, financing, planning, and marketing their small businesses. Unless otherwise noted, classes are free and will be held on the Pinehurst campus in Van Dusen Hall, room 102.

Small Business Start-up Series

"Selling Made Simple" will teach you to sell your products. It's not what the brand offers; it's what the customer buys, and neither is perceived to be equal. Learn how customers perceive products and services, to identify how customers make decisions based on perceptions and lived experiences, and how to apply behavioral science principles to strategic marketing, communication, and product development. This class will be held on Thursday, September 5, from 6-8 pm. 

"Start Your Business" will teach you how to create actionable, relevant, and sustainable business practices. Discover resources to craft a business strategy that targets specific, measurable, and timely goals to attract investors, lenders, and customers, and supports a profitable small business model. This class will be held on Monday, September 9, from 1-3 pm at the Hoke Center.

鈥淗ow Money Works鈥 will teach you how to create a working budget sheet, a better understanding on how to crush debt, how to stop living paycheck to paycheck, how to build emergency savings, and how to understand how interest rates are affecting you鈥n both the good and bad ways. This class will be held on Tuesday, September 10, from 1-3 pm.

"Starting an E-Commerce Business" will explore the features of well-known e-commerce sites such as an eBay Store, Shopify website, Amazon.com, and Etsy as well as creating your own website as an online store. One way to expand your small business is to sell products online. Developing a revenue stream from online sales is an easy way for small businesses to increase their profits. Learn what sites work best to sell your product or service. This class will be held on Tuesday, September 10, from 6-8 pm. There will be another class offered on Monday, September 16, from 1-3 pm at the Hoke Center.

"QuickBooks Online 101" is a two-part series in which you will discover ways this popular online software can help small business owners save time, simplify bookkeeping, and avoid costly errors. You will learn how to set up accounts, track business income and expenses, and generate financial reports. Basic computer knowledge is required. This class will be held on Wednesday, September 11, from 1-3 pm.

In "Business Structures & Registration," you will learn about the various types of business structures and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Discover how to register with the NC Secretary of State, the IRS, and NC Department of Revenue. Three sections of this class will be offered in September. Two at the Hoke Center on Thursday, September 12, from 6-8 pm and Monday, September 23, from 1-3 pm. This class will be offered on the Pinehurst Campus on Tuesday, September 17, from 6-8 pm.

"Write a Winning Business Plan" will teach you how to turn your small business ideas into a solid plan for long-term success. Learn how marketing, operations and finance are interrelated. Discover how a business plan is used by potential lenders, and steps for making the process easy. This class will be held on Thursday, September 12, from 6-8 pm.

"QuickBooks Online 102" is part two of this series; discover advanced topics on managing accounts receivable and accounts payable and how to reconcile small business bank accounts. Basic computer knowledge is required. This class will be held on Wednesday, September 18, from 1-3 pm.

"Psychology Infused Marketing" will equip marketers with the knowledge and tools to create highly effective and impactful marketing campaigns that build trust, engagement, and lasting connections with consumers. You will gain a deep understanding of human behavior, emotional branding, persuasion techniques, and more. This class will be held on Thursday, September 19, from 6-8 pm.

"How to Implement Sustainability & Strengthen Resiliency in Your Business Operations" is a sustainability presentation to raise awareness and engagement in federal, state, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce sustainability, climate, and resiliency solutions that not only benefit business owners, CEO鈥檚, managers, and employees but also promote a healthier community, environment, and economy. This class will be held on Tuesday, September 24, from 2-3 pm.

"Bookkeeping Basics" is for new business owners or those who need a refresher on the basics of accounting; this seminar is designed for you. You will gain a working knowledge of how to properly record small business financial transactions. Discover the three most important financial reports. Learn how to use these reports to make the best-informed business decisions. This class will be held on Wednesday, September 25, from 1-3 pm.

"Registering in SAMS" is required for any entity to bid on and get paid for federal contracts or to receive federal funds. These include for-profit businesses, nonprofits, government contractors, government subcontractors, state governments, and local municipalities. In this workshop, learn how to properly register on sam.gov and what issues to look out for. Please bring a laptop to start registering on sam.gov during the workshop. This class will be held on Thursday, September 26, from 1-4 pm.

"Financing Your Business" is for business start-ups and owners challenged by financing. You will learn how to seek out funding for your business. Discover the proper information needed for the process. Explore the advantages of different types of funding sources and how to choose the right one. This class will be held on Thursday, September 26, from 6-8 pm at the Hoke Center.

"How to Increase Your Credit Score to Over 740 Points: Prepare for a Bank Loan!" A very good credit score is now considered to be 740 points or higher. Should you have one credit card or four? Should you pay off your balances every month or carry a balance? Should you carry a credit card even though you have not used it in years? The answers to these questions may surprise you when it comes to increasing your credit score. This webinar will also include information about the importance of maintaining good credit and the positive financial consequences it produces. Using several proven methods, your credit score could increase by 50-100 points or more within 60 days. Make plans to attend now! This class will be held on Thursday, September 26, from 6-8 pm. 

"Business Tax Essentials" will teach you the basic requirements to help NC small business owners understand the laws and obligations necessary to be tax compliant. Learn about filing and administrative requirements. Learn the basics of NC sales, use tax law, and withholding tax law. Review directions for completing sales tax and withholding returns and for filing and paying online. This class will be held on Monday, September 30, from 1-3 pm at the Hoke Center.

The Small Business Center- Online Seminars

"ABCs of Starting a Small Business on a Limited Budget" will provide small businesses with the information to get started on a limited budget. In these challenging times, everyone from the government to your local banker is trying to help you succeed. This webinar includes the legal basics, tips for low-cost marketing, funding suggestions, and more. These are the ABCs of how to start a small business combined with winning strategies from low-cost start-ups. This class will be held virtually twice on Thursday, September 26, from 2-3 pm and 6:30-7:30 pm.

Writing and Managing Grants

"Grant Management" will teach you how to write a grant, which is essential to many nonprofits and entrepreneurs, but what happens after you receive the grant? Join Sandra Dales as she shares how to properly manage grant funding. This class will be held on Thursday, September 26, from 1-3 pm.
